What the tape shows
The tape from 2022-23 at Cal is genuinely excellent — patient, vision-heavy, gap-scheme runner with legitimate burst and receiving ability. The 2024-25 tape is nearly unwatchable, defined by an ankle injury, a shoulder injury, and a 68-yard Oklahoma season that prompted criticism. At his best, Ott is one of the most instinctive zone readers in this class. He presses the line with a slow-mesh feel that forces defenders to commit, then pulls the trigger into the backside gap with sudden burst that creates significant separation before the second level can close. He lacks the technique and apparent willingness to take on NFL-caliber blitzing linebackers. He will whiff on chip assignments, get walked back into the pocket, and is not a viable option in three-down situations until this is repaired. In the modern NFL where third-down back value is premium, this is a significant limitation.
